Answer

What are mint, freeze and update authorities?

Short answer

Mint, freeze and update authorities are the three permissions that let someone create new supply, freeze a holder's tokens or change a token's name, ticker and image — and on a pump.fun coin all three are null at creation.

What each one allows

Each authority is a switch. A token with a live mint authority can be inflated at will; a token with a live freeze authority can trap a buyer's balance; a token with a live update authority can be renamed or re-imaged after people have bought.

None of the three requires the holder's consent, none of them show up on a price chart, and none are visible in a trade history. They are read from the mint account itself.

  • Mint authority: create new supply, diluting every existing holder. The most dangerous permission a token can carry.
  • Freeze authority: freeze a specific token account so the holder cannot transfer or sell.
  • Update authority: change the metadata — name, ticker, image and description.

How buyers check

Authorities are on-chain state, not a claim in a chat. Block explorers and token pages read them directly, and revocation tools read the same fields. Checking them takes seconds and does not require trusting the coin's own website.

The failure mode is subtler than a live authority. A token can be fully revoked and still go to zero, because revocation only removes one class of rug — it does nothing about a coin that simply has no buyers.

  • Open the mint account and read its authority fields.
  • Null means renounced: the permission no longer exists.
  • A revoked authority cannot be restored — there is no admin key that hands it back.
  • Revocation cost at third-party vendors runs about 0.1 SOL each, though some charge nothing.

What pump.fun does

On a pump.fun launch the mint authority, freeze authority and metadata update authority are all null at creation. Supply is fixed at 1,000,000,000 and the name, ticker and image cannot be changed afterwards.

That removes the three most common mechanical rugs. It does not make a coin a good buy — most coins go to zero on price alone, and the absence of an authority is not the presence of demand.

None of that depends on the creator's goodwill. Every coin created through the program starts with all three authorities null, and the metadata is written once, at creation.

  • Fixed supply: no dilution after launch.
  • No freeze: holders can always sell, into whatever liquidity exists.
  • Immutable metadata: the coin cannot be renamed to impersonate another.
  • Authorities cannot be quietly reinstated later.

Related questions

Can a revocation be undone?

No. Setting an authority to null is permanent; there is no path back.

Is a token with null authorities safe?

It is free of three specific rug mechanics and nothing more. Most coins still lose value, and revocation does not create buyers.

Who holds the authorities on a pump.fun coin?

No one — all three are null at creation.

Where to go next

If the brand and the page are what is stopping you

Mint a Brand draws the icon, banner and stickers, builds the token site on its own subdomain and prepares the launch for your wallet to sign, for $30. Your wallet pays the network fee and is the creator of record.
